Why did her vagina smell the way it did? She remembered the uncomfortable moments she endured as a child with the local hair braiders putting her head in between her laps. Now, this fishy smell was becoming familiar to her.
Every effort should be made to keep the vagina fresh. Every female has a natural vaginal scent that may be slightly altered throughout her menstrual cycle. There are also women who experience a different smell after sexual intercourse. A strong even unpleasant odour is sometimes indicative of an infection.
Unpleasant smells are also caused by poor hygiene, which can be tackled by;
- Regular showers; Simply use mild soap and water to clean the outside of your vaginal area. Water only is fine for the inner areas. Rinse well and dry before you put your underwear on
- Grooming; maintain a shave or trim to prevent sweat and odours accumulating especially on hot days
- Frequent change of sanitary products during menstruation
- Change in clothing
- Avoid douching as it rids the vagina of the natural flora meant to protect
Certain bacterial infections can cause the vagina to have a different odour. Nearly every woman has experienced a form of infection or irritation of the vagina at some point. It is easily treated but the symptoms can be very annoying and uncomfortable.
Some of the common infections are;
Vaginitis
If you have vaginitis, your vagina or vulva may be red, irritated, or uncomfortable with unusual discharge and smell. You also may have itching or burning in or around your vagina. Sex is more uncomfortable even painful and you may feel as if you need to urinate (pee) more often than usual.
Yeast/Fungal Infections
Yeast infections typically characterized by white, odourless discharge. Also, itching is very common with yeast infections.
Bacterial Vaginosis
Unlike the other infections listed with bacterial vaginosis, you may not have any symptoms. Or you may have a heavy vaginal discharge usually greyish-greenish, foamy with an unpleasant, “fishy” odour.
See a health care provider if you experience any of these symptoms, they are relatively easy to treat and treatment is in some cases available with a prescription. Also do not have sexual intercourse till treatment is completed.
